Officials announced on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 4, that a fire at the Town of Huntington’s Boxer Court maintenance facility destroyed six of the 15 garbage trucks in the overnight hours.
"I am relieved to report there are no injuries," Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth said. "The cause of the fire is under investigation however, it does not appear to be suspicious. The explosions many residents reported hearing came from the tires of the trucks as they burned."
Smyth added that officials are confident regularly scheduled household garbage pickup will be maintained on most routes, and residents will be notified if an adjustment is needed.
"We are all grateful for the swift and effective action from all of the firefighters from Huntington Manor and Huntington Fire Departments who responded," Smyth said.
On Sunday evening, officials announced that Oyster Bay provided five loaner trucks to ensure reliable garbage collection in Huntington.
